Libertarians seem to hate ‘monopolies of violence’, while supporting them at the very same time.
They say that the government is this evil entity that uses a monopoly of violence to maintain control of the populace. But they are perfectly fine with property owners monopolizing violence over private property.
They even argue against liberals using the same anti-monopoly rhetoric:
Everyone always says monopolies are bad. But yet everyone is okay with a virtual monopoly on education by the government. - baseballlibertarian
That’s really quite ironic, given that capitalism is nothing but the interaction of many, many monopolies.
Libertarians feel that private property ownership is a more justified type of monopoly, because those monopolies are somehow “voluntary”. Yeah fucking right. When did I give you permission to claim access to a bunch of oil? Yeah, you did voluntarily trade some green sheets of paper with some other dude who had used violence to acquire/claim that oil. But I never voluntarily submitted to jack shit.
I’ll (again) post my favorite rousseau quote:
The first person who, having enclosed a plot of land, took it into his head to say this is mine and found people simple enough to believe him was the true founder of civil society. What crimes, wars, murders, what miseries and horrors would the human race have been spared, had some one pulled up the stakes or filled in the ditch and cried out to his fellow men: “Do not listen to this imposter. You are lost if you forget that the fruits of the earth belong to all and the earth to no one!
Libertarians: if you want to make any sense at all, stop talking about monopolies of violence, because when you support capitalism, you are supporting monopolies of violence.
